A STUDENT LEADER…

Along with performing and creating art, Jaala is also an active student leader at her university. She is positioned co-chair of a contemporary dance senior student led initiative called the Pluck Project. Her responsibilities involve overseeing, coordinating, fundraising, budgeting, and outreach in efforts to bridge the gap between student and professional life in dance.

Jaala was also Executive Assistant and Community Outreach Representative of an organization at her University called Artists of Color. Artists of Color is a student-run multicultural organization whose primary purpose is to represent and advocate for students of color at UNCSA and to ensure that voices are heard.

A PAGEANT GIRL?

In 2017, Jaala competed in her first pageant and won the title of “Miss Black North Carolina Talented Teen 2018”. In competing and holding a state title, comes great responsibility. Jaala’s platform during her year reign was “ I BALLET”. “I BALLET” is an empowering mentoring program created by Jaala and her team for young aspiring black ballerinas. Its purpose is to cultivate self-esteem, improve focus and physical health, develop social skills and ultimately share the beauty of performing arts to those who otherwise may not be exposed. Jaala went on to compete in the National competition, Miss Black USA Talented Teen 2018, and placed first runner-up.
