DANCE ON FILM

“Alone Together” [left] is a dance on film choreographed and directed by Jaala McCall after the peak of the Coronavirus outbreak. The oxymoron depicts individual loneliness and isolation and simultaneous unity and common ground in experiencing the quarantine.

“BLESSINGS” [right] is a self choreographed and performed film dance on film created in 2020 by Jaala McCall. “BLESSINGS” was inspired by visual artist Kara Walker’s “Katastwóf Caravan”. Walker is known for investigating race, gender, sexuality, and violence through silhouetted figures in her art. She created a caravan playing with silhouette imagery and placed it on the Mississippi River where enslaved Africans were once held before being distributed to slave markets across the river. “BLESSINGS” incorporates elements of color and silhouette while utilizing music that highlights elements of the black experience.
